[edit]I just added a lot of content to this page but it's mostly from Aussaresses' own book about his work in Algeria. It would be great if anyone had any other sources to add to this page.--Moocow9 00:31, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Paul Aussaresses
[edit]During 1943 and 44 Lt. Paul Aussaresses was part of the Jedburghs operation. These were three-man teams of free French with either British or American partners. Their job was to coordinate and supply actions of the French resistance to delay and disrupt German forces that were trying to engage the allied invasion. The operations of the Jedburghs are described in the book "The Jedburghs" by Lt Col Will Irwin, published in 2005 by PublicAffairs, NY. There is a brief mention of Aussaresses. The teams trained at Milton Hall in England. Team 'Chrysler' parachuted from a B-24 near Carcassone, Fr on August 16, 1944. Like Aussaresses, many of the Jedburghs later became significant members of the post war intelligence and special operations forces of the US, UK and France. Former CIA director William Colby was a Jed. (I know of this because my father, Cyril Sell, Capt, British Army, was his teammate.)--user:Gosell 24 January 2005.

[edit]It is a bit misleading to say that Horne "still maintains" that it is unclear if the French army acted on its own, when applying torture in Algeria, since for this article the 1971 edition is used. Aussaresses was quite candid in his interview in Le Monde thirty years later(May 3rd 2001): «Quant à l'utilisation de la torture, elle était tolérée, sinon recommandée (my emphassis). François Mitterand, le ministre de la justice, avait, de fait, un émissaire auprès de Massu en la personne du juge Jean Bérard qui nous couvrait et qui avait une exacte connaissance de ce qui passait la nuit» That should settle the matter. 137.120.53.13 20:06, 25 January 2006 (UTC)jahb@xs4all.nl
